Durham in the north east of England is a small, historic city on the River Wear, with a highly regarded university.
Many visitors come to see the historic Cathedral, with its famous cloisters and Prior Castell's Clock. Or Durham Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the city.
Also popular, are the Botanical Gardens on the outskirts of the city.
Durham's main shopping streets are mostly confined within a meander in the river, over which many bridges cross (for instance, Kingsgate Bridge, Waterside Elvet Footbridge) . Thus it is possible to cross the river twice, while walking in a straight line!
